The installation of 420 “smart” parking meters was expected to wrap up Friday in Manhattan Beach, City Manager Dave Carmany said.
The new high-tech solar-powered M5 meters — which are available in downtown parking lots, near Bruce’s Beach and around El Porto — offer additional payment options such as credit/debit cards, smart cards, and pay-by-cell technology. With these new additions, the total number of credit card-capable meters in Manhattan Beach stands at 1,400, a city statement said.
Manhattan Beach introduced the concept in 2010. The downtown business association was a key proponent because of the meters’ convenient payment options.
“As a testament to their enhanced customer service, in March alone, credit card usage was 62 percent,” the city said
