West Covina asks supervisors to activate site for COVID vaccines, tests

West Covina Mayor Pro Tem Dario Castellanos visited Cameron Park with Eddie Catich and his staff with Fulgent, a laboratory contracted through the county that conducts and processes COVID tests, to assess it as a site for a vaccination and test site on Saturday, Jan. 23.

“We’re ready. We’re 100% ready to go,” West Covina Mayor Letty Lopez-Viado said. “I just know we need to have County Department of Health activate. There is an agreement in place.” The West Covina City Council submitted a letter to Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis asking to activate the site.

The city is planning a soft opening of the test site on Feb. 1 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Public vaccinations are expected to begin on Feb. 8, according to West Covina City Manager David Carmany.

Lopez-Viado said she wants to have a vaccination site in the city that is easily accessible. The closest COVID vaccination site for residents of West Covina, she said, is Dodger Stadium.

“It is a need. If it’s local, it’s easier, it’s closer, it’s convenient,” Lopez-Viado said. “There’s a need. We have everything set. We’ll take care of the logistics. We’ll take care of making sure everything is clean, disinfected, and everything runs smooth.”
